Thank God for Mississippi has been a long standing phrase that I’m just beginning to know and understand. It’s the half joking half serious saying that many states use to spare them the shame of finishing in last place within our national ranking systems. While statistically speaking this may be true, there is still a unique quality in this part of the region unlike anyplace I’ve ever known.
It’s hard to mention Mississippi without acknowledging its seafood, delta music and most importantly Mardi Gras. The blending of cultures, customs and entertainment makes this place a hotspot for travelers looking for adventure, good food and fun. However, one of the things I recommend a first time traveler to experience is Mardi Gras which takes place every year in February. Just like its cultural cousin only 70 miles away in New Orleans, Mississippi has its own week long celebration that rivals Louisiana. Nonstop music and dancing along with numerous parades and balls will keep the party goers extremely busy. If you’re searching for a slightly slower pace then look no further than the beautiful beaches this region has to offer. From bathing out in the sun, picnics, fishing or walking along the white sands of Biloxi beach you are sure to find that much needed relaxation.
For those music lovers on vacation, the sounds of jazz and blues music are around every corner. Historically, the songs of blues music primarily known for its lyrics expressing heartache, betrayal and bad luck originated and grew out of the Mississippi Delta. If you have the chance, I would highly recommend visiting the Ground Zero Blues Club for an authentic experience and the Delta Blues Museum to learn more about this unique genre of music.
Of all the things mentioned so far, my favorite would definitely be the food. The gulf shore truly has a culinary style of its very own blending a mix of African, French, Spanish and Cajun foods creating a unique cuisine. From the many ways they prepare catfish and shrimp, po’boys, red beans and rice and their notably famous Mississippi Mud pie, you can’t go wrong eating anywhere in Mississippi.
Yes it’s true my state has its faults but it’s still the place I’m proud to call home. I urge any traveler to take a chance, venture out and explore the gulf shore and you’ll see why so many have fallen in love with this place.
